Lower Wharfedale

Wharfe is a Celtic name meaning the winding river. At this stage the river Wharfe is generally more sedate then most in the dales, but it famously runs deep and narrow through a tight gorge in lower Wharfedale called the Strid.

Bolton Abbey near Skipton, was built in 1154 and is the main historical feature of the dale. It was an Augustinian Priory destroyed by Henry VIII during the Reformation. The priory itself is a ruin, but a 13th century church is still in use.

Grassington is the main town, with cobbled streets, tourist shops and riverside paths making this an attractive base for touring. Don't miss the two-week arts festival in June. Other "picture postcard" villages include Burnsall and Appletreewick.

Wharfedale is easily accessible from the towns and cities on the M62 corridor. The many villages in the valley provide lots of choice for accommodation, food and drink or just a chance to enjoy the scenery.
