Swaledale and Arkengarthdale

Swale is a river name of Anglo-Saxon origin and is thought to mean swirling, swallowing river. It is one of the fastest flowing rivers in England and is the home to many waterfalls. In ancient times it was within a Celtic kingdom called Catraeth. Many of the areas in Swaledale are of Viking origin before the Norse invasions.

The area is famous for it’s hardy moor-land sheep, wild flower meadows blooming in June and lead mining industry dating back more than 2000 years.

Swaledale and Arkengarthdale are probably the most remote and less commercialised of the Dales, making a great base for outdoor activities and walking holidays.
