Upper Wensleydale
Prehistoric earthworks can be found in Wensleydale, and artefacts from the Bronze and Iron Ages can be seen in the Dales Countryside Museum, Hawes. The Romans built here and village names reflect the presence of Anglian and Norse. Dales image
Hawes image The pretty market town of Hawes is situated on the river Ure, and is home to the famous Wensleydale Cheese Creamery, made famous by the Wallace & Gromit films. Cheese making in this area was thought to have been started by French monks who eventually settled in Lower Wensleydale in 1145.
Wensleydale offers so much for the visitor today with lots to do and see. The scenery ranges from wild, rugged moorland to lush, meadows and waterfalls. Numerous outdoor activities keep the visitors happy as well as craft shops and visitor centres. Waterfall image
